Here’s a peek at some of the fun programs we’ve had at the library so far this summer.
Book Smack and STEAM
The kids all got a chance to talk about a book for 30 seconds. Most of them went over time and had marshmallows thrown at them to let them know their time was up. We then did a fun STEAM activity with KEVA Planks, Lego, and Ozobots. The kids created a city for the Ozobot and drew roads for it to follow. The team work and creativity was fun to see.
Geoff Aikens of Bubble Wonders came and showed us through his bubble presentation that Anything Is Possible!
The ORL Maker Crew showed us how a 3D printer and green screen work. We even got to try using a handheld 3D printer!
Opera Kelowna: The Joy of Song
We even had Opera in the library! Thank you Haley for a wonderful presentation and for singing to us.
Don’t miss out on this amazing presentation by Donna White!
When: Saturday, February 3 at 11:00am
Where: Salmon Arm Branch of the Okanagan Regional library.
Due to the theme of this presentation, it is advertised as ages 13 and up (yes, that means adults, too), but children under 13 are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult. Donna White will talk about the experiences of child soldiers as well as post traumatic stress disorder.
For some of us, 30 seconds isn’t enough time to say all we want to say about a good book. However, it is long enough to get the audience curious enough to want to read it…while throwing marshmallows to get the speaker to stop talking.
This summer’s Books Smack & Marshmallow Toss has been filled with fast paced book reviews, fast pitched marshmallows, and hilarious Minute to Win It games.
Here are some Book Smackers playing the Minute to Win It game ‘Cookie Face’.
First, a huge thank you to our Salmon Arm Friends of the Library (FOL) for sponsoring our programs year after year. I don’t know what we would do with out you!

Donna White’s presentation of her new book Bullets, Blood & Stones: the journey of a child soldier was deeply moving.
Thank you for a wonderful presentation, Ms. White! We look forward to hearing about your future publications.
This hilarious club is for ages 9-14 and is at 3:30 on the first Thursday of each month from October through December.
Here’s how the club works… Everyone gets a chance to share a book in 30 seconds or less. If the timer goes before the speaker finishes talking, we all get to throw a marshmallow at the speaker. After the book sharing and marshmallow throwing/eating, we play fun games like Quelf and Minute-To-Win-It.
Our final program for the fall is:
December 1- Registration begins November 17, 2016, click HERE to register.
